Translation Highly learned persons hear of the Tao, then work hard to practice it. Less learned persons hear of the Tao they think the Tao may be true or may not be true. The least learned persons hears of the Tao they laughs. It is easy to understand why laugh because the Tao is not easy to understand. There are sayings which illustrate this: The Tao is sometimes clear and sometimes obscured. The path of the Tao sometimes seems level and sometimes seems uneven. High virtue is magnanimous like the open valley. Great honesty seems like stupidity. Great virtue seems like it is imperfect. Building virtue secretly seems like stealing. Solid virtue seems like it is changing. Great generosity knows no limit. Great achievement is slow in coming. Great sound is the silent sound. Great phenomenon is that of no phenomenon. That is why the Tao has no name, it is anonymous. But the Tao lends others to achieve. | Interpretation The Tao is not easy to understand. So is that of virtue. Just like the Tao, virtue is also anonymous. |
