Translation The Tao that can be explained is not the real Tao. Names that can be named are not their real names. Nothingness is the beginning of the heaven and earth. Existence is the mother of everything. Often, contemplating on the nothingness in order to see the wonders of how things happened. And often, contemplating on the existence of things in order to see the ultimate reason for things which come to exist. These two things – the nothingness and the existences of things came from the same source but are given different names. They are both mysteries There are mysteries beyond mysteries. We are just opening up the gateway to mysteries further beyond. | InterpretationTao is a mysterious thing. It is beyond our human comprehension. Its power, its purpose, its nature, is infinite. Human words and human thinking are finite. Therefore human words cannot totally explain what Tao really is. All things and all phenomena are given names. But these names are given by human beings according to our interpretation and our perception of things as the way we see it, such as we feel it and such as we know it. Therefore these are finite names. They are not real names. Lao Tzu said in the beginning there was nothing. Some mysterious force in nature- some called it Yin and Yang, some called it cause and effect, some called it existentialism, but it caused all things to manifest and exist. Lao Tzu, in meditating and contemplating on the nothingness, began to see the mysterious wonders how existentialism came to be. He tried to trace the ultimate reasons how things came to be. He concluded; this is a mystery of nature, a mystery of the universe, a mystery of Tao, and even mysteries beyond our comprehension. |
